What is Medical Implant Stainless steel?

There are two types of stainless steel used for surgical implants in the ISO 5832 series. The first is ISO 5832-1 and the second is ISO 5832-9, both of which are austenitic stainless steels, which are required to be free of ferrite and therefore non-magnetic. Surgical implants stainless steel mechanical properties and machinability is better, suitable for forging processing and mechanical cutting processing. Compared with other alloys, there is a greater cost advantage. Is widely used in bone plate bone nail, joint handle and other components.
Advantages:
· Iron-Chromium-Nickel ternary alloy
· Better corrosion resistance
· High wear resistance
· High fatigue strength
· High toughness
Disadvantages:
· Corrosion reduces long-term implant stability
· Elastic modulus mismatch causes stress shielding.
· Nickel ions cause allergies in ~20% of people, ~5% severely.
· Poor bioactivity, hindering firm integration with biological tissue
Tendencies:
· Still the main material for bio-implants
· Developing alloys with high corrosion, wear, fatigue resistance, and toughness.
· Nickel-free or low-nickel high-nitrogen stainless steel offers excellent mechanics and corrosion resistance.
